Crossroads by Ammar Habib
A short story of hope and love.
Aaron turned around just in time to see the overweight secretary from the front desk stop a few feet away from him. The rather large lady was still not smiling. Aaron stumbled to his feet and picked up the manuscript off of the table. He smiled at the grey-haired lady, but the gesture was not returned.
“I phoned up to Mr. Levin’s office. He said that he cancelled his appointment with you.”
In that instant, Aaron’s heart plummeted down from the stars and shattered as it hit the ground. His eyes widened. His heart stopped. His dream was crushed. Seeing his reaction did nothing to the secretary. “C—cancelled?”
What do you do when your hopes and dreams have been destroyed and you are left unemployed and far from home with not enough fuel in your car for the long return journey?

“Her mother’s funeral was the breaking point. After years of her and Felicia living with an abusive husband and father, she had finally died of a broken heart. A heart that had been broken and crushed a thousand times over. After seeing her father barely shed a tear at the funeral, Felicia did not think twice about what she did next. With nothing but the clothes on her back and what little money she had, she got in her car and drove away.”
